The US tariff exemptions for electronics are ‘temporary’, says the Secretary of Commerce

Trump administration exemption on electronics tariffs can be short -lived.

The Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, said on Sunday that the decision of the White House to exempt articles such as smartphones, computers and other electronic products for the consumption of steep tariffs earlier this month was only temporary.

A new set of duties focused on semiconductors is expected within “one month or two,” he said.

“All these products will be low semiconductors, and they will have a type of special approach to ensure that these products are reformulated,” Lutnick said during an ABC interview this week.

The objective, he added, is to encourage the production of flat chips and panels in the US and reduce the dependence of Asian manufacturing. The clarification follows a Customs Bulletin and border protection of the USA.

However, Lutnick emphasized that those same elements would soon be swept under a more specific policy aimed at “national security” industries such as semiconductors and pharmaceutical products.

“We need to have french fries, and we need to have flat panels, we need to do these things in the United States,” Lutnick said.

The price of Bitcoin fell approximately 1% in the headlines that reported on Lutnick’s words, before recovering to the $ 84,000 mark. The largest cryptographic market, measured by the Coindesk 20 (CD20) index, has dropped approximately 1.6% in the last 24 -hour period.
