Battle of Trans athletes of Maine: Democrats trying to constitutionalize trans inclusion

The Democratic majority in Maine’s House of Representatives voted to approve a bill that would encode the Maine Human Rights Law (MHRA) in the State Constitution on Thursday.

The MHRA has been the pole legislation of the State Store by allowing Trans athletes in girls sports during an ongoing dispute with the administration of President Donald Trump on the subject.

The law was amended four years ago to add gender identity as a protected class and specifically declared that denying a person the same opportunity to participate in sports is discrimination against education. Last year, the Association of Directors of Maine updated its policy to allow athletes to compete against the genre they identify.

The proposed bill to constitutionalize the MHRA approved with a simple majority in the Chamber on Thursday, but will need a two -thirds majority in both cameras before you can go to voters.

Meanwhile, the Republican minority in the Chamber is supporting a proposal to eliminate the term “gender identity” of the MHRA.

The vote occurred one day after the United States Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the State for its continuous challenge of the executive order to “keep men out of Trump’s women’s sports.” Maine has faced immense federal pressure in the last two months for his refusal to fulfill, including two federal investigations, a freezing of funds by the United States Department of Agriculture and now an official demand.

But Democratic leadership in the state, led by Governor Janet Mills, has remained firm in his commitment to challenge Trump and ensure that biologically male trans athletes can still participate in girls ‘sports and enter girls’ locker room.

The MHRA has been the central law in which the Democrats have supported themselves to justify their challenging position.

Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey justified the breach of his state with Trump when he summon the MHRA in a CNN interview on Wednesday.

“Our position is that Title IX, consisting of Maine’s Human Rights Law, so the Federal and State Law, it supports that trans girls may participate in high school sports according to their gender identity,” Frey said. “So, my statement is that Maine is following Title IX, Maine is following Maine’s human rights law.”

Pak Gazette Digital obtained previously statements from the Association of Directors of Maine and Administrative District 51 of the Maine School, citing the MHRA for its refusal to comply with Trump’s executive order.

“The Association of Directors of Maine is obliged by law, including the Maine Human Rights Law (MHRA), which reflects our participation policy,” authorities said. “We cannot sign any resolution agreement that orders that we believe a new policy that violates law and MHRA.”

The administrative district of the Maine 51 school, home by Grelyly High School, where a transgender athlete prompted the national controversy after winning a girl pole jump competition in February, also pointed out Maine’s Human Rights Law for allowing the athlete to compete.

“The Board of Directors of MSAD #51 is guided by the mission, vision and fundamental values of our district. This includes promoting a safe, attentive and ethical learning environment where each person will be treated with respect and equity; and people are recognized, valued and supported,” the district said in a statement.

However, most Maine residents do not agree to allow Trans athletes to compete in girls’ sports.

TO survey The coalition of American parents discovered that about 600 registered voters of Maine, 63% said that school sports participation should be based on biological sex, and 66% agreed that it is “just restricting women’s sports to biological women.”

The survey also found that 60% of residents would admit a voting measure that limits participation in Women and girls sports for biological females. This included 64% of independents and 66% of parents with children under 18.

And although Maine’s Democratic leadership refuses to comply with Trump’s executive order, a school district is taking the matter in her own hands and challenging the state anyway.

The MSAD #70 School Board voted unanimously on Monday night to comply with title IX, “recognizing only two sexes: biological women and biological women and that all private spaces are separated by biological sex.”

The superintendent of MSAD #70, Tyler Putnam Putnam, told Pak Gazette Digital that, due to this vote, he is now ordered to amend the district policies to prevent Trans athletes from competing in girls’ sports.

“Our Board, similar to many people in Maine, has been following the round trip communication between the Federal Government and the State. We hope that both parties work together to help support local school districts like us,” Putnam said.

“The Board and the number 1 priority of our staff is to provide our students with an education that will positively impact their future in our great state and country.”
