Dji is not one to rest in his laurels. The Mini 4 Pro could lead the invoice in our summary of the best drones you can buy at this time, but the new online leaked images seem to show that the manufacturer is underway with the development of a successor.
The images, shared in Dronexl, seem to show that the DJI Mini 5 is being tested in the public streets of China. Included in an article written by Jasper Ellens, a reliable source of the drone industry, the granulated shots have a quadcopter that resembles the mini 4 pro, although with a larger front chamber lens and what seems to be a couple of lidar sensors above.
This supports an previous publication of Ellens, shared in X in December 2024, which states that the Mini 5 will have lidar sensors and “stronger (ventilated) engines.”
The frontal lidar sensors would give the new model a more effective collision avoidance system. As we saw in the Air 3S last year, Lidar is better capable of navigating obstacles and land at night, compared to standard vision technology. His presence in the mini 5 would be the first time for any sub-250g drone, assuming that the rumored model remains within the same kind of weight as the previous versions.
The drone in the photo also has guards around his blades, although they could be in his place as a security measure during the tests, instead of a permanent characteristic.
Although DJI has not officially announced a launch date for Mini 5, the appearance of a public test unit suggests that the company is in the last stages of development. Some sources anticipate that the new drone will break the coverage in the summer of 2025. A revelation around August or September would fit the established launch cycles of DJI, which mark two years since the DJI Mini 4 PRO reached the market.
Other features are still a lot of speculation. Some websites have reported that the DJI Mini 5 could present a 1 inch sensor and a 50 -minute flight time, which would be a significant step of the 1/1.3 -inch sensor and the flight time of 34 minutes of the DJI Mini 4 Pro. That said, there is little forceful evidence to support these statements today.

Lidar, lidar?
The Mini 5 is not the only next DJI Drone, it is rumored that obtains Lidar capabilities. Intel recent also suggests that Mavic 4 Pro will benefit from improved obstacle avoidance sensors. This could indicate that DJI has managed to develop a more compact lidar module that can be more easily packaged in drones in its range.
While his presence in a Sub-250g would be a change of play, if Lidar only guarantees an update for the owners of the Mini 4 Pro, it remains to be seen. Certainly it would be another pen in a well -sunk reverence, but lidar is for limited use for users who only fly their drones in open space in clear days.
Of course, it is not the only rumored update for the DJI Mini 5. The strongest or most efficient engines could give the drone an improved performance in all conditions, while the improved flight times would take the series significantly where the mini 4 pro did. A 1 -inch sensor also points to a clearer image with little light.
Together, these improvements would be a stronger case to invest in the new model. If you are really in the tests, we should not have too much time to wait for more specific specifications. If the previous DONS development cycles have something to do, the information filtered on the mini 5 will not be scarce.
