The United States Department of Education launched an investigation into the New York Department of Education (NYDOE) on Friday on a Long Island High School pet.
The NYDOE prohibited the logos and pets inspired by the Native Americans for the high school sports teams, which has made Massopequa District in Long Island an objective due to its continuous use of the name of the Chiefs pet.
A 2022 mandate of the NYDOE demands that all public schools withdraw the American native pets or run the risk of losing state funds. Four Long Island school districts, including Massopequa, filed a lawsuit that challenges the order, but a federal judge dismissed the case.
Now, the Trump administration is getting involved.

“The United States Department of Education will not remain as the state of New York tries to rewrite history and deny the city of Massopequa the right to celebrate its inheritance in its schools,” said the Secretary of Education of the United States, Linda McMahon, in an announcement on Friday.
“While New York chooses to prioritize the deletion of the Native Americans, their rich history and their deep connection with the State, it requires that schools divert time and resources of what really matters: to educate our students. The announcement of the investigation states that the Guardian Association of the Native Americans (NAGA) filed a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights of the Department of Education of the United States (OCR).
The NAGA affirms that the New York Board of Regents is violating the Federal Civil Rights Law by forcing the Massopequa School District to eliminate its main pet based on its association with the American native culture.
“The Native American Guardian Association remains firm in stating that the preservation of native issues and images in New York public schools is not only a matter of cultural dignity, but a fundamental civil law for all students. We call federal and state leaders to help us defend these increasing expressions of our presence and contributions,” said Frank Blackcloud, vice president of NAGA.
“Maintaining a respectable presence in New York state schools is vital for educational equity, historical truth and civil rights of all US Indians.”
The president of the Massopequa Education Board is cited in the announcement that thanks the Trump administration for getting involved.
“We thank the Department of Education and the Trump Administration for standing with Massopequa in our effort to preserve the name of the Chiefs and honor the proud history of our community. We are especially grateful to the Guardian Association of the Native Americans for their support and defense,” Watcher said.
“Attempts to erase the images of the Native Americans do not advance learning. They distract our main mission of providing high quality education based on respect, history and community values.”

Trump spoke previously in support of the school’s right to maintain his name.
“I agree with people in Massopequa, Long Island, who fight furiously to maintain the Massopequa Chiefs logo in their teams and school.” Trump wrote about social truth.
“Forcing them to change the name, after all these years, is ridiculous and, in reality, an affront to our great Indian population. The school board, and practically all in the area, demand that the name be maintained. McMahon, to fight for the people of Massopequa on this important issue.
