Shedeur Sanders was the 144th selection of the NFL draft when the Cleveland Browns added it to their depth table in the fifth round on Saturday afternoon.
The free fall lasted more than expected, but Sanders finally found a home on the third day, starting the trip to become the seafood of the team holding at some point during the 2025 season.

He will join a field marshal room that has Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and his rookie partner Dillon Gabriel. Deshaun Watson’s status in 2025 is murky at best after injuring Achilles in the low season. Watson suffered a tear of Achilles last October.
The general manager of the Browns, Andrew Berry, disseminated their expectations for each field marshal that the team brought during the low season.
“We hope each player competes. Simple like that,” he said.
The Browns chief coach Kevin Stefanski was asked how he would ensure that each of the four healthy quarters was going to receive a fair shot.
“We have talked about that. I mean there are ways to do both, I think,” he said. “Obviously, it is possible that they are not divided 25, 25, 25, but we feel really sure that we will have a plan that is fair for each player and also just for the team.”
The Browns acquired Pickett in the low season in an exchange with the Philadelphia Eagles. It served as support for Jalen Hurts with the Eagles and received a ring when the team won the Super Bowl on the Kansas City Chiefs in February. Previously it started with the Pittsburgh Steelers after the team selected it in the first 2022 draft round.
Cleveland brought Flacco back after going to the Indianapolis Colts in 2024. He took care of a injured Watson in 2023 and helped take the Browns to the playoffs. Flacco won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens in 2012.

The Browns selected Gabriel in the third round on Friday. He played his university ball in UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon. Last year with the Ducks, it had 3,857 air yards and 30 TouchDown passes. He was a finalist of the Heisman trophy. It also has the FBS record for most TouchDown passes launched in a race.
Berry explained why the team decided to take two quartbacks in this year’s draft.
“I think that as I could probably say that the plan was not necessary to take two runners. As you imagine how the draft could play, and then you really adapt to what is on the board,” Berry said. And as I said, as we really do not enter the draft saying that it is fine, as ‘hey, here are our needs and we will only choose the players in the positions of need’.

“If he does, this is how he makes mistakes. Therefore, there is a bit of flow to the weekend because the board takes different turns and turns as it progresses. Some expected, some unexpected and, ultimately, we try to do everything that is in our power to maximize the impact of the selections we have in aggregate. And part of the reason why it has to make it be flexible.”
Sanders will have a uphill battle in an attempt to reach the initial work, and a place on the list, once the season officially begins at the end of this year. However, it is far from being impossible.
“I know I’m going to fit perfectly,” he told reporters. “I feel that he is entering first, showing respect for veterinarians, showing them that I am ready to work. Show the coaches and make them understand that I am here ready to work. So that they can really understand the real self.

“That is what I am really grateful to have, it is the opportunity for people to really see the real self and cannot see things that could be true or not. That is what I am most excited to be in the building and, of course, the staff, the cafeteria [staff]Everything was extreme, people there were genuine. It was really great. So I left that visit knowing that if that were the place for me, I would feel very comfortable with what they have in place. “
