- 25,000 workers only saw a time savings of 2.8% after using Genai chatbots
- 8.4% saw new tasks created, adding to their workloads
- Time savings rarely translate into higher gains
According to a new working document of the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics of the University of Chicago, the generative chatbots of AI such as Chatgpt, Gemini and Claude have had a minimum impact on wages or employment so far, despite the starting concerns and the apprehension of the workers.
The findings come from a study of around 25,000 workers in Denmark in 11 occupations exposed to AI. The study did not find significant changes in profits or hours worked after the implementation of these AI tools.
Anders Humlum and Emilie Vestergaard, the authors of the newspaper, also noticed notable economic results, such as total employment and salary invoices at the company level.
Genai is not really affecting the workers, the study finds
The document explores how companies can guide their workers, noting that breath and training efforts can boost adoption. Investments led by firm almost doubled the adoption rates from 47% to 83%, according to the investigation.
However, the average time saving by users was only 2.8%, just over an hour on the basis that an employee is working in a 40 -hour week. In addition, only 8.4% of the workers created new jobs, such as teachers who monitor traps assisted by AI-AI, workers who edit the results of AI and the elaboration of better indications.
Contrary to promises that save time, Humlum and Vestergaard pointed out that these additional responsibilities actually increased workloads in some cases, which means that savings in time only translated into higher profits of 3-7% of the time.
The researchers said: “While the chatbots of AI are now widely used, save users and create new labor tasks, especially in workplaces that foster their use, their general impact on the labor market remains limited.”
They also pointed out that “the rigidities of the labor market seem to delay the economic impact”, which demonstrates how the focus of a company to artificial intelligence can issue its success.
