Proton Mail could soon stop working in India after the decision of a court to issue a locking order against the service.
The Superior Court of Karnataka instructed the Indian government to block Protons mail on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. A New Delhi firm filed a complaint against the email service last November, accusing some unknown users of Proton Mail to send emails abusive to its employees.
The order “Block Pronmail” It was issued under section 69 of the 2008 Information Technology Law, the judge said during the Tuesday hearing that was broadcast on YouTube, adding that the offensive URL “must be blocked immediately.”
The decision occurred when the email service could not reveal the details of who sent the supposedly offensive emails. These messages were specifically addressed to the employees of Moser Design Associates and included an abusive and derogatory language together with deep images generated by AI and explicit content, the new Indian Express reported.
This is not the first time that the Indian authorities threaten the Swiss supplier with a locking order. In February 2024, something similar was suggested in response to the threats of deception pumps that were sent through the protons mail service.
“The problem has been raised to the attention of the Swiss federal authorities, who have been in contact with the relevant Indian authorities to avoid the blockade of Proton Mail in India,” Proton confirmed at that time.
Is protons email available in India?
