The recent decision of the Colorado football program to withdraw the number 12 of Travis Hunter and the T -shirts No. 2 of Sheduer Sanders received some criticisms. Both T -shirts of the former Colorado players officially retired earlier this month during a special ceremony in the Buffaloes spring game.

Only four other players in the history of Colorado football have been honored through a jersey retirement. Colorado football dates from 135 years. The criteria applied to the respective retirees of Sanders and Hunter differ from what other former players faced.

In the 1990s, a student-attach had to meet a graduation requirement before a jersey retirement. A spokesman for the Athletics Department confirmed to USA Today Sports that both Sanders and Hunter had not yet graduated at the time of the April 19 retirement ceremony.

School officials also clarified that the graduation criteria was never an official policy, saying that it was previously the “preference of an academic counselor.”

The officials added that the administration of the Athletics Department, together with the chief coach, can make Jersey retirement decisions to his own discretion.

Michael Jones is one of Colorado’s last soccer players to speak as consequences of the controversial decision about the continuum. Jones suggested that his former university lacks a Jersey retirement process.

“So that they do not have a process to withdraw a number, it is an institution like Colorado,” Jones told the USA Today Sports. “It’s completely Asinino.”

Dary Hagan, who played as a field marshal in Colorado, told The Outlet that the controversial retirement decision left him “printed.” Do not discredit the contributions of Sanders or Hunter to Colorado, but expressed his belief that he should receive the honor “someday.”

“They always told us that there was a waiting period,” said The Outlet. “There was an established policy. I had to be voted. They never told me that it was at the discretion of the Atlético director or the chief coach. That was a shocking news for me. It was difficult to bear.”

Sanders and Hunter played their last game with a Colorado uniform at the end of December at the Alamo Bowl. Hunter was the second general selection in the NFL 2025 Draft. Sanders’ unexpected fall in the draft last week was closely observed worldwide and beyond. Sanders was finally selected in the fifth round and will begin his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns.

Colorado won the National Championship in 1990. Jones pointed out the history of the program and suggested allowing Sanders and Hunter effectively to skip the Jersey retirement line contributed to “a serious draft of our football legacy,” he wrote in a publication on social networks.

In other places, Colorado has strict policies for its Athletics Fame Hall.

If a player is considered eligible, athletes must be a minimum of 10 years retired from his career as a player in Boulder. The individual should not compete in any professional sports league, for nomination documentation.
