- Sony has revealed that it will announce the Xperia 1 VII on May 13
- The company has also mocked that it will be “driven by Alpha”
- This probably means a real approach to the improvements of the camera.
Sony’s Xperia 1 phones are among other things known by quite impressive cameras, but strangely, although Sony is also doing a range of ‘alpha’ popular and capable cameras, the company has not used the ‘Alpha’ brand in its Xperia telephone cameras before. But it seems that he is about to change.
In a teaser video on YouTube, the company has revealed that the next Sony Xperia 1, which will probably be called Sony Xperia 1 VII, is landing on May 13.
This teaser does not give much, but it does mention that the phone is “fed by Alfa”, and then shows an alpha camera, followed by images of people who take photos with what is probably the Xperia 1 VII.
So, if nothing else, this tells us that photography is probably an important approach to the Sony Xperia 1 VII, but what it means exactly “fed by alpha” is less clear, with that potentially referring to software, hardware or both.
Even so, according to our Sony Xperia 1 VI review, we can say that we hope that the quality of night image and dynamic range optimization improve, since they were weak links in the performance of the photograph of that phone.

A trio of sensors, probably with updates
Assuming the phone shown in the video is the Sony Xperia 1 VII, it has a design similar to the Xperia 1 VI, complete with a back plane and three rear lenses. We also have an idea what these lenses could be, with leaks that point to a main sensor of 48MP (with optical image stabilization), an ultra camera of 12MP and a 12MP teleobjective, with a focal distance that can vary 70-200 mm.
That is widely similar to what you will find in the Sony Xperia 1 VI, except that the teleobjective camera is limited to 85-170 mm.
Even so, even if these leaks are correct, we may see other changes to justify the ‘Alfa’ brand, such as larger sensors, better lenses or software improvements.
Far from the cameras, it has also been reported that the Sony Xperia 1 VII will have a 4K, 120Hz screen, an elite chipset Snapdragon 8, up to 16 GB of RAM, up to 512 GB of storage and a battery of at least 5,000 mAh.
Therefore, this could be a highly capable phone, but with the current model that costs £ 1,299 / au $ 1,899 (without availability of the USA.) It is also probable that it will be extremely expensive. We should find out for sure very soon.
