Last week, the Sheriff of Riverside County, Chad Bianco, made it clear that the investigators had not found “nothing” that suggested that the criminal activity had taken place during the incident. “This seems to be a horrible accident,” Bianco told The Post, noting that “a couple” of the people involved in the incident “are great profile celebrities,” Bianco told The Denver Post.

“And that makes this more a problem than it should probably be,” Bianco said at that time, pointing out that his department had received a “mass research of the media” after the news occurred. “We are doing everything possible to make sure this is what appears to be and only an accident,” he added.

Elway issued a statement on April 30, saying that he was “disconsolate.”

“I am absolutely devastated and disconsolate by the death of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” Elway said in a statement, through ESPN. “There are no words to truly express the deep sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant a lot to me.”

Elway won two Super Bowls with the Broncos and was included in the Hall of Fame of Professional Soccer in 2004.
