Huawei software ambitions are expanding rapidly. What began as a survival strategy in response to US sanctions has become a bold initiative to position harmonies as a dominant operating system in smartphones, tablets, televisions and soon, PC.
Now with the aim of exceeding one billion users, Harmonyos is preparing for a new computer era after Huawei lost access to Microsoft Windows licenses.
Originally presented in 2019 after seven years of development, Harmonyos, known as Hongmeng In China, it was Huawei’s response to be cut from Google’s Android ecosystem.
One billion smartphones driven by harmonyos
The operating system first appeared on smart televisions and expanded rapidly to smartphones in 2021. At the end of 2024, more than 900 million devices were already running harmonyos, and that number is expected to cross the mark of one billion people soon.
This rapid adoption is reflected in Huawei’s mobile performance; His smartphones recently exceeded Apple in Chinese market share, reaching 19% compared to 17% Apple.
This growth has laid a solid base for Huawei to climb harmonyos on more devices, since it seeks to unify its ecosystem, reflecting the perfect integration of Apple between iOS, iPados and Macos.
In March 2025, the Huawei license to use Microsoft Windows expired. Due to the ongoing sanctions in the United States, the company cannot renew the agreement. As a result, Huawei is taking another bold step by replacing windows with harmony in their future laptops.
The company has already shown a new nameless laptop that executes Harmonyos 5, also known as harmony below. Unlike previous versions, this edition is no longer based on Android and is fully developed internally. Huawei is expected to officially throw the device at the end of this month.
The new operating system admits basic productivity tools such as WPS Office and Enterprise applies as Dingtalk. Thousands of Harmonyo mobile applications are expected to run in the new laptops, offering users a family and mobile experience on desktop devices.
With its great ecosystem, which covers smartphones and beyond, the harves could soon arise as one of the best Windows alternatives, particularly in regions where access to the Microsoft operating system is restricted or prohibited.
