Rory Mcilroy completed his Grand Slam career last month. The current Masters champion recently arrived at Charlotte for the second major of the 2025 season, the PGA championship.

Mcilroy finished the tournament in a three-way draw for 47th place, finishing the largest in 3-over. On Sunday, the last day of the tournament, he also marked Mcilroy’s fourth consecutive day to decline to talk to members of the media gathered in Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

The speculation swirled that the Irish of the North avoided making public statements to the press in the light of the situation with his driver before the tournament. The United States Golf Association (USGA) ruled that the Mcilroy driver was not satisfied. The ruling forced Mcilroy to make a change.

Mcilroy’s name was linked to the failed test and finally became public knowledge, probably through a leak. USGA’s policy prevents the organization from revealing the name of any player who receives a failed test.

Scottie Scheffler wins the first career PGA championship

Mcilroy was ultimately one of the multiple competitors that was forced to make a team change for the PGA championship.

Xander Schauffele, who won the PGA championship last year, hinted that Scottie Scheffler also had to make a change.

“I think Scott is winning the tournament, and I think he also changed to his support,” Schauffele told Golfweek. “Look, you don’t even know, because it’s very good. We can deal with that because the representatives (of the team) are very good now.”

Scheffler and Mcilroy are backed by Taylormade. Until Sunday night, the brand had not published a public statement about the drivers of the golfer.

Schauffele said that trying the clubs of each competitor helps to “protect the integrity of the field.”

“I think everyone should try the driver,” he said. “It is not right to try 50 boys. It simply makes no sense if you are in it for the spirit (of the game). The whole point is to protect the integrity of the field. If you do not test everyone in all areas, I do not think you are protecting the entire field.”

In the midst of the controversy, the PGA of America issued a statement.

“We can confirm that the USGA was invited to do club tests at the PGA championship, at the request of the United States PGA,” reads the statement partly. “This test program is consistent with the same level of support that the USGA provides the PGA Tour and other championships, as part of its regular programs for the driving test. The standard process is for one third of the field to be randomly tested under the program. That was the case in the case of Quail Hollow. Scheffler won the PGA championship on Sunday to obtain the third great victory of his career.
