The government simplifies birth, death registration laws

The Punjab Local Government Department has simplified laws regarding family records, birth and death certificates, and registration.

The registration period for birth and death has extended, and the birth registry for children of up to seven years will now be free; This offer is valid until May 31, 2026.

The authority to handle delayed records has changed the Junior staff to the upper officers, including attendeing directors.

The requirement of a judicial decree for the late registration has been abolished. After the approval of the Secretary of Law and the Secretary of the Local Government, the new rules have been officially notified in the Punjab Gazette. According to the notification, the birth and death record will be completely free within the first year. After seven years, a birth registration rate of RS200 will be applied.

For Pakistani abroad, the rate will be RS1,000; For foreigners, RS2,000. The rate for the registration of death after seven years will be RS1,000.

The rates for corrections and changes will be RS500, and the duplicate copies will cost RS200. The computerized copies rate has been abolished.

The new regulations, with immediate effect, aim to make registration processes more accessible and easy to use.

The updated rules stipulate that the registration of children of up to one year will fall under the authority of the Secretary of the Pertinent Union Council, while children up to seven years will be under the jurisdiction of the deputy director.

Registration for those prior to seven years will be handled by the deputy director. Previously, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) developed a mobile application to facilitate the online record of births, deaths and changes in marital status.

The application, initially launched in Punjab, allows citizens to register life events from home.

Biometric verification is being made available to all union councils in the province.
