Verónica García, a transgender competitor, has been at the top of the competition in races of 400 meters of the girls during the outdoor season of the Washington state in 2025 and ended first during the state championships on Saturday.
Garcia, who competes by East Valley High School in Spokane, took home the title in race 2a for the second consecutive year. Garcia ended first in the 2A District Championship of the Spokane Mayor League on May 23 and won several other regular season races during the year.

On Saturday, Garcia told the Seattle Times that there were boos of the crowd that they did not agree that biological men should compete against girls in sports. However, Garcia shot with a challenging message after the race ended.
“I’ll be honest, I wait for him,” Garcia told The Outlet. “But maybe it didn’t have its planned effect. He angered me, but not angry like, I wanted to give up, but angry like, I’m going to press.
“I’m going to put this in the most PG-13 way. I’m going to say that it is a damn pity that they have nothing more to do. I hope they get a life. But hey. Just show who they are like people.”
Garcia ended with a time of 55.70, more than a complete second faster than the second place finalist that recorded 56.75.

Washington has been among the states to challenge the executive order of President Donald Trump to keep men out of women’s sports.
The representative assembly of the Association of Interscollastic Activities of Washington (WIAA) proposed two amendments to its policies earlier this year that would maintain the sports of girls only to biological women and potentially they would offer an open division if athlete students were interested.
The proposals were only advice votes and no changes in the rules were made. Washington officials have warned that any proposed change would violate state law.

Washington State Law requires that local educational agencies allow transgender students to participate in interscholastic sports “that align more closely with their gender identity,” according to WIAA.
