Brooke Shields revealed that he tried to have fun Meghan Markle during a panel at the SXSW conference in March 2024, but his attempt was counterproductive.
The mother of the bride’s star shared that the Duchess of Sussex interrupted during the talk because the conversation felt too serious.
Remembering the incident, the actor said that Meghan was counting his well -known story about writing to Procter & Gamble at age 11 to protest an announcement of sexist dishes.
Talk about India Hicks’ Podcast, added that the moment was becoming too heavy and decided to lighten the mood joking: “When he was 11 years old, he was playing a prostitute,” referring to his role in the movie Pretty Baby.
The public laughed, but Shields said Meghan did not seem too satisfied with the interruption.
“It was too beautiful,” he said about Meghan’s story, and added that he was worried that the audience would not “sit here for 45 minutes and listen to someone to be beautiful or serious.”
“Katie asks Meghan’s first question and talks about how at an early age, she was already advocating women, etc., etc.” Shields recalled, referring to host Katie Couric.
While Meghan Markle shared her family history about writing to a soap company at age 11 to protest a sexist announcement, Shields said Meghan repeatedly mentioned her age.
About this, the actor felt that he was becoming too serious and decided to interrupt his midpoint, saying: “Sorry, I’m very sorry. I have to interrupt you there for a minute.”
“I was trying not to be rude, but I wanted to be fun because it was very serious,” he added.
“I just want to give everyone here a context of how we are different. I said: ‘Well, when I was 11 years old, I was playing a prostitute.”
“The place went crazy. And luckily, it was more relaxed after that.”
But Meghan apparently did not take it so well. “And then, she was like, oh, that’s fine. And I thought, let’s have fun with that,” Shields said.
