Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described on Thursday the appointment of Pakistan for several anti -terrorism agencies of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a “question of great pride” and a reflection of the confidence of the international community in the country’s anti -terrorist credentials.
Prime Minister’s comments occurred a day after Pakistan was elected vice president of the UNSC Anti -Terrorism Committee and appointed to preside over the 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee of the Council in 2025.

“These appointments are an international recognition of Pakistan’s anti -terrorism efforts,” the mission said in a statement.
He added that Pakistan was still committed to work closely with the United Nations and other Member States to maintain the UN Letter and contribute to global efforts against terrorism through international collaboration.
According to the updated president list for the subsidiary agencies of the UNSC, Denmark will assume the president of the 1267 ISIL sanctions committee (DA’ESH) and AL-QAIDA in 2025, with Russia and Sierra Leone designated as vice presidents. Algeria will direct the 1373 committee against terrorism, while France, Pakistan and Russia will serve as their vice presidents.

In addition to presiding over the 1988 sanctions committee in 2025, Pakistan will work with Guyana and Russia, who have been appointed vice presidents of the same committee. The 1988 Committee supervises the implementation of sanctions, including asset freezing, travel prohibitions and the embargo of weapons, in individuals and entities linked to the Taliban that represent a threat to peace and stability in Afghanistan.
The recent election of Pakistan as a non -permanent member of the Security Council for Mandate 2025–26 consolidates their diplomatic position in the UN. The country obtained 182 votes from 193 in the elections of the General Assembly of last year, significantly exceeding the required majority of two thirds.
The UN Security Council is composed of 15 members, including five permanent members: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, with the power of Veto, and ten non -permanent members chosen for terms of two years. The current non -permanent members are Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia.
