Have you been using iOS 18 on your iPhone since it was launched in September? Or maybe you are in the camp to wait a bit to update until friends or family do it, or read reactions of those who have tried it.
Well, regardless of the camp in which it is located, the IOS 18 of Apple 18, and the iPados 18, the operating system for the iPad, officially has eight months. Although that is not a year, the World Developer Conference of the Company in 2025 will begin on Monday, June 9, with a key opening note. We expect the revelation of the next generation of iOS and other platforms.
In the days before that event, Apple is sharing the final use numbers of iOS 18 and Ipados 18. While the technological giant does not promise a specific number of years for software updates and equally essential security updates, iOS 18 admits to iPhone XR/XS and iPados 18 works on the iPad 7th Gen, iPad Mini 5th Gen, iPad Pro 1st Gen and Ipad Air 1st Gen.
That is a wide range of compatible devices, and for iOS 18, 82% of all eligible iOS devices are executing the latest and largest in Apple. With respect to eligible devices published in the last four years, the installation rate is higher: 88%. Meanwhile, 71% of all iPads that can execute Ipados 18 have it installed, and the iPads launched in the last four years have an installation ratio of approximately 81%.
IOS 18 and Ipados 18 were also quite large updates, by one, the launch of Apple Intelligence with iOS 18.1 began in October 2024, but that remains incomplete, and the long -awaited Siri with engine AI is still delayed. You can use characteristics such as Genmoji, Image Playground, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence in eligible iPhones or iPads that admit Apple’s intelligence.
However, beyond that suite, iOS 18 broke the so -called application grid, which allows you to place applications wherever you want, even with intermediate spaces, on the iPhone and iPad. It also allows you to adjust the color or tone of your entire home screen, including application icons. The photos application was redesigned and added customization, but was not loved by all. In addition, Apple finally added support for RCS messaging, in addition to being able to rework the design of the control center.
It was a solid and considerable launch for iOS and Ipados, which even received smaller updates and is currently in iOS 18.5 and iPados 18.5. Many of the features work on devices from the iPhone XR, although the general speed and battery life may vary.
So, if you have not yet updated to iOS 18 and you are on iPhone, Apple’s last numbers put you in the smallest group. That is not a bad thing, but it is a good idea to keep your phone updated beyond the new features, since privacy and security updates are also included in these updates.
But how does this compare with Android phones? As I wrote before, Apple does not guarantee a term, but you can see that it goes back to six years for iPhones, since the XS was launched in 2018.
Samsung now guarantees the majority of its Galaxy telephone line for seven years of software updates, while Google Pixel phones receive five years of updates for the 6 -year -old and more pixel, and this increases to seven years for Pixel 7 and newer. That means that if you get a Pixel 9, you can expect updates until 2031.
Depending on the model, Motorola offers three years of main updates of the operating system plus an additional year of security updates. OnePlus offers four years of updates and safety on their homonymous flagship phones.
While we expect new versions of iOS and iPados on WWDC 2025, the rumor has not mentioned that Apple promises a specific number of years of software and privacy updates. That could happen, but I think the approach will focus on the very rumor of a professional vision design for the rest of the platforms: think of glass and elegant at all times.
