The Uber CEO, Dara Kosrowshahi, said the transport giant is exploring the use of cryptography as a payment method, which marks the third time that the company has made the claim since 2021.
Speaking on Thursday at the Bloomberg Tech conference in San Francisco, Khosrowshahi said the company is in the “study phase” of the assessment of the stable for operational use.
“I think Stablecoins is one of the most interesting instantlations of cryptography that have a practical benefit beyond being a value reserve,” said Khosrowshahi.
Uber was an early member of the Diem Association (previously Libra), which joined in 2019 to support the now missing Metablin Stablecoin initiative aimed at remodeling global payments.
“You can have your opinions about Bitcoin, it is a proven merchandise, and people differ in where they are going. But Stablecoins seems quite promising, especially for global companies that move money internationally,” Khosrowshahi continued on Thursday. “That is very interesting for us, and we will definitely take a look.”
The comments echo what Khosrowshahi told CNBC in September 2021, when he said Uber “would analyze” accept BTC and other cryptocurrencies as payment.
At that time, he dismissed any plan to put cryptography in the company’s balance, saying: “We are going to keep our effective safe.”
Later, in February 2022, Khosrowshahi told Bloomberg that the company “absolutely” would accept cryptocurrencies as a form of payment at “some time” in the future, but emphasized that the moment was not yet well.
“We are having conversations all the time,” Khosrowshahi said at that time. “As the exchange mechanism becomes less expensive and becomes more friendly to the environment, I think you will see us supporting cryptography a little more.”
When he made comments related to cryptography in 2021, BTC quoted plane over the next three months.
However, his February 2022 comments occurred weeks before the beginning of an important correction of the industry market, which later began that spring.
