The CEO of the Google parent company, Alphabet, has returned the fear of the growing adoption of AI will lead to employment cuts.
Speaking in an interview with BloombergLike Pichai said that AI could help Alphabet increase its workforce, instead of leading to dismissals and losses.
“I hope we grow from our current engineering phase even until next year, because it allows us to do more,” said Pichai, noting that AI could be “an accelerator” that drives the development of new products, which in turn needs more human workers.
Ai labor concerns
Alphabet has made several large -scale layoffs in recent years, with 12,000 workers cut in January 2023, and around a thousand released the course of 2024, with Google also announcing several hundred more cuts in 2025.
However, many of the world’s largest technology companies have also been forced to make similar cuts, such as Microsoft, which recently announced that 7,000 roles would go.
Pichai was hope that the impact that AI will have on Alphabet workers, noting that technology could free them from repetitive or boring administration work to address more creative tasks.
He recognized the concerns about AI taking human work and addressed the recent comments of the CEO Anthrope Dario Amodei suggesting that AI could eliminate half of the white -collar white collar work in five years saying: “I respect that … I think it is important to express those concerns and discuss them.”
“There are many advances ahead with the paths in which we are, not only the set of ideas we are working on today, [but] Some of the newest ideas we are experiencing, ”added Pichai.
“I am very optimistic to see a lot of progress, but you have always had these technological curves where you can reach a temporary plateau. So are we currently on an absolute path to AGI? I don’t think anyone can say with certainty.”
