Islamabad:
The Department of Meteorology of Pakistan (PMD) has issued a severe warning of heat waves in most parts of the country during Eidul Azha holidays and the following week.
According to the MET office, a high pressure system on the country is expected to develop on June 7, which will grab most regions from June 8 onwards, significantly increasing the temperatures of the day.
Diurnal temperatures are expected to increase 5-7C above normal in the upper half of the country, including central and upper punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Cashmira and Gilgit-Baltistan from June 7 to 12.
In the southern half, covering the upper and central part of Sindh, southern Punjab and parts of Baluchistan, temperatures are likely to remain 4-6C above normal during the same period.
Dust storms and strokes on the plains are also anticipated due to excessive surface heating.
The MET office has urged the general public, especially children, elders and women, to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and stay well hydrated.
Citizens are recommended to take all precautionary measures to prevent heat -related diseases.
The increase in temperatures in the northern areas could accelerate the speed of the thaw, which can affect water flows in the rivers. The authorities have urged the judicious use of water and asked farmers to plan their crop activities in line with the prognosis.
All interested departments have been advised to remain alert and take the necessary actions to mitigate the risks during this severe climate spell.
