Coco Gautf became the first American in a decade to lift the trophy after the final of the female singles in Roland-Garros and asked what it means to represent the United States.

After defeating Aryna Sabalenka, No. 1 of the world, in three sets to win the France Open, the wing was asked what it is like to travel around the world as an American.

“It means a lot. Obviously many things are happening in our country at this time,” Gasff replied, through the tennis letter. “Only to be a representation of that and a representation of people who resemble me in the United States, who may not feel so supported during this period of time. Being that reflection of hope and light for those people.”

Gonff continued mentioning the presidential elections of last year, and the country’s response after President Donald Trump was elected to his second term. She referred to him as a “period of leave” in the United States.

“I remember that after the elections and everything, a period was felt a bit. My mother told me during Riad, try to win the tournament only to give people something to smile for. That is what I was thinking today,” Gasff said.

Despite the “inactive period” comment, Gasff said it is “definitely patriotic.”

“Some people may feel some kind of way of being patriotic and things like that, but I am definitely patriotic. I am proud to be American. I am proud to represent Americans who resemble me and the people who support the things I support,” Gobef added.

The 21-year-old fell to the clay and covered her face in Roland-Garros after an exciting game against Sabalenka. Gonff lost the first set in a tiebreaker, but fought to win the second set, 6-2, and went out with his second Grand Slam after a third 6-4 final.

The last American to win the France Open? Serena Williams lifted the trophy in 2015.

“The crowd really helped me today,” Gasff said after the game, since celebrities like Spike Lee, Dustin Hoffman and many more encouraged her remarkably throughout the game. “You were encouraging me so strong, and I don’t know what I did to deserve so much love of the French crowd. But I appreciate you guys.”
