Islamabad:
President Asif Ali Zardari said that Pakistan and Russia have a “enormous potential” that must be used to expand bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, technology and exchanges of people to people.
He made these comments while heading to a ceremony held in Islamabad on Tuesday to commemorate the 35th National Day of the Russian Federation.
“On this important occasion, Pakistan joins Russia to celebrate this National Day, reflecting our solidarity and friendship,” said President Zardari. “I am glad to say that our bilateral relations have improved over the years, according to mutual respect, cooperation and interest shared in several fields.”
He extended warm congratulations to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ambassador Albert Khorev and the people of Russia. The ceremony began with the national hymns of both countries, solemnly observed by the attendees.

President Zardari said that Pakistan considers Russia as an important global power and a key player in promoting peace and stability in the Eurasian region.
He highlighted the recent high level exchanges between Islamabad and Moscow, describing them how to lay the foundations for a deeper commitment. “Pakistan and Russia also continue to cooperate closely on regional and international platforms,” he added.
Referring to the recent diplomatic dissemination, the president said: “The special assistant of the Prime Minister, Tariq Fatemi, had a very promising meeting with Russian Foreign Minister in Moscow earlier this month, where both parties had stressed the importance of peace and stability in the region.”
Expressing optimism about the future of bilateral ties, the president said: “I am sure that the bonds of friendship between Pakistan and Russia will continue to strengthen. As we celebrate this important occasion tonight, we reaffirm our commitment to the construction of bridges of understanding and cooperation between our two nations. Allow us to cover the opportunities that are forward and work together for an attempt and more prosperous in the future.
Previously, in his welcome speech, Russian ambassador Albert Khorev said that Russia remained a sovereign, powerful and resistant nation, “driven by the unwavering support of its people.”

Citing President Vladimir Putin, the ambassador said that Russia had historically played a unifying role in the region, which extended “from the Baltic to the Caucasus.”
He observed the “satisfactory rhythm” of Bilateral Pak-Russia cooperation in multiple sectors and appreciated Pakistan’s growing interest in Russian culture and language.
“We praise Pakistani enthusiasm for learning the Russian language,” he said. “The Russian mission actively supports the establishment and expansion of language learning institutions throughout the country.”
Ambassador Khorev reaffirmed Russia’s support to Pakistan on several international platforms and expressed the desire to deepen ties in education, diplomacy and mutual development.
The ceremony concluded with a musical performance by a Russian popular artist.
