- Steam’s last beta is executed natively in Apple Silicon
- Apple withdraws Rosetta’s compatibility layer 2
- Games should work more smoothly and efficiently
After WWDC 2025, we have had a burst of Apple’s advertisements this week, including the news that Macos Tahoe 26 will be the latest version in admitting Intel Macs, and right on the signal, Steam has finally delivered a version of his client that runs natively in Apple Silicon.
See the notes of the version to obtain the latest beta version of Steam Client (through PC Gamer), and you will see the most important news that “Steam Client and Steam Helper applications are now running natively in Apple Silicon” included in the update details.
Until now, Steam for Macos has always been coded for the X86 Intel chips sets, instead of the arm chips developed by Apple, which has meant that in Mac-Macs, the client has worked through the Rosetta 2 compatibility layer that Apple provides.
In addition to dropping Intel chips support, leaving older Macs in Macos 26, next year macOS 27 will be the latest version in admitting Rosetta 2, Apple announced on WWDC 2025. That means that developers will have to publish versions encoded by the arm of their applications.
How to try it now
For those of us without interest in chipset architecture or compatibility layers, this simply means that Steam Macos games should work more efficiently and without problems, think of faster box speeds and a better useful life of the battery, in general.
You must also find the Steam customer starts faster and is more receptive when used in Macs. A large part of that is due to the user -based user interface that works natively in the arm, instead of having to translate.
If you want to try the beta version now, you can do it: the usual warnings with beta software apply here, since it can notice more errors than normal, and some of its games can be failed, but any problem must be solved over time.
From the Steam application in your Mac, choose Steam> Preferences> Interfacethen click on the It is not chosen beta drop -down menu to the right of the Beta participation of the client header: then you can select Steam Beta Update To join the beta.
