- Microsoft Edge has introduced a new password administration function
- The tool is available as part of a Microsoft 365 subscription
- Administrators now have more control over the exchange of users’ credentials
The new safe implementation function of Microsoft Edge’s safe password has reached general availability.
This aggregate browser function helps keep credentials safe by preventing passwords from being shared with wrong people, accidentally or otherwise.
Safe password implementation is now available for Microsoft Edge for business users of M365 Business Premium, E3 and E5 subscription options.
Avoid credentials
The safe password implementation tool allows users to obtain passwords on the websites authorized to create a fluid login experience, but prevents users from visiting, editing, eliminating and most importantly, prevents the user from exporting their passwords.
“In many organizations today, employees often resort to sharing passwords through adhesive electronic notes or emails. This not only exposes confidential credentials to unwanted recipients, but also increases the risk of these passwords being sent or badly used,” Microsoft said in the announcement.
“The implementation of safe password allows administrators to implement shared passwords encrypted to a set of users within their organization. With this function, users will receive the passwords implemented on their device and can log in without problems on the websites.”
Passwords stored in the safe password implementation tool are encrypted using Microsoft Information Protection SDK and linked to the identity of a user, which allows companies to apply access control policies.
Administrators can use the tool to apply highly granular configuration in browser configuration for individual users or user groups. Administrators can start using the tools using the Microsoft 365 Administration Center to access the EDGE administration service, and then configure an existing policy or create a new policy, then go to the safe password implementation page through the customization configuration tab.
“This integration carries the power of the Microsoft data protection platform directly to the edge management experience, which gives administrators a perfect way to implement credentials safely while aligning with zero trusted principles and compliance requirements,” Microsoft continued.
“When integrating the protection SDK directly into Edge for Business, we expand Microsoft data protection capabilities to the end point, which affects that confidential information is protected from configuration to consumption.”
