LAHORE:
Punjab Prime Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has requested immediate and sustained efforts to protect land and natural resources for future generations.
In his message on World Day to combat desertification and drought, the CM warned that the non -controlled effects of climate change, deforestation and water scarcity are rapidly eroding agricultural capacity and the degradation of soil fertility through Punjab. “Drought is not just a layer of sand, it is the sign of an imminent environmental crisis,” he said.
Underlining his government’s commitment to environmental protection, the CM announced that the Punjab government has assigned special funds in the 2025-26 budget for geotagging stress areas.
She said that new filtration plants will be installed and existing ones will be repaired to guarantee access to clean water throughout the province.
CM Maryam Nawaz highlighted Punjab leadership in climate action, pointing out the introduction of the first integral climate policy of Pakistan aimed at addressing the challenges raised by environmental degradation.
He also reaffirmed the government’s resolution to expand the plant for the Pakistan campaign, which focuses on arid land. “Each tree is a symbol of life in the regions affected by drought. We will not let the earth be suffocated, changing our habits is the only way to change the environment,” he added.
