NYT Connections Today (game #743) – The answers
The responses to today’s connections, game #743, are …
- Yellow: Jeans types Boyfriend, Bengal, mom, skinny
- Green: fiction categories Historical, literary, speculative, young adult
- Blue: Words in Hemingway titles Bell, farewell, old man, sun
- Purple: ___ Glass glassware Cocktail, collins, outdated, shot
- My qualification: Hard
- My score: Fail
The first thing I thought when I saw today’s connections was ‘alcoholic beverages’, not because I am obsessed (I am not a great drinker), but because Old Fashed and Collins could be types of cocktails. But the presence of cocktail itself suggested that it was a bad direction, so I looked elsewhere.
The historical, literary, speculative and young adult seemed examples of fiction categories and, in fact, my feeling was correct, giving me green.
Then, I thought Flare, Skinny and Bell could be related to jeans or pants style types, but I didn’t know what the room would be, so I kept looking for.
And I kept looking. And looking.
With nothing more suggesting, I returned to that potential group and tried a succession of words: mom, ancient and old, but I was wrong every time. It turns out that Bell was wrong, and what he should have had was a boyfriend, Bengal, mom and skinny, but I have never heard the term boyfriends and, therefore, I lost my incipient streak.
In retrospect, I should probably have renounced that angle before, but not even the words in the Hemingway or ___ glassware titles were groups that would have received, so it would not have made any difference.

- Purple: what could mean “left” Party, port, progressive, remaining
What are NYT connections?
Nyt Connections is one of the several increasingly popular words games made by the New York Times. It challenges him to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite hard and purple generally very difficult.
On the positive side, he technically does not need to solve the end, since he can answer it for an elimination process. In addition, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some space to breathe.
However, it is a bit more involved than something like Wordle, and there are many opportunities for the game to move you with tricks. For example, be careful with homophones and other words games that could disguise the answers.
It is playable for free through the Nyt Games site in desktop or mobile.
