It is possible that you have seen our recent items on the next NBN speed updates of September 2025, which will affect the rapid NBN plans from 100 Mbps. If you have not done so, and you are landing on this page for the first time, then there is a quick summary here.
What are the NBN speed updates?
In summary, NBN CO introduces a new level of speed known as NBN 2000, which will offer download speeds of up to 2 Gbps, twice that the fastest current level of Gigabit NBN 1000.
Together with this new level, NBN CO has also announced some speed updates to a selection of current NBN levels:
- NBN 100 plans will see a 5x speed update and will become NBN 500, with a maximum discharge speed of 500mbps
- NBN 250 plans will obtain a 3X speed impulse and will become NBN 750, with a maximum discharge speed of 750MBPS
- NBN 1000 plans will be updated at a minimum guaranteed speed of 750 Mbps, but still maximum 1,000Mbps. They will also receive an increase in load speed, from 50Mbps to 100Mbps. We imagine that they will still be referred to as NBN 1000.
When are NBN speed updates?
NBN CO has written on September 14, 2025, since the date on which the updates will be available for retailer suppliers (RSP) at the wholesale level. We still have no confirmation when they will launch customers, which depends on the RSP to decide.
Some suppliers will surely launch the switches (or shortly after) that date of September 14, however, others may take longer. We hope that, in most cases, there is a gradual launch that occurs during September and October 2025.
Who can access these NBN speed updates?
Due to the highest speeds involved, these speed updates will only be available to homes and companies that connect to the NBN through a fiber to the facilities (FTTP) or the type of coaxial hybrid fiber connection (HFC).
Currently, NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans already require these types of connection, however, NBN 100 plans are available for virtually all those that connect to the fixed line NBN network. Therefore, only customers with a NBN 100 plan and Those who connect through FTTP or HFC will be eligible to receive the speed impulse at 500 Mbps.
How can I get the NBN speed update?
If it already connects through FTTP or HFC and is registered in a NBN 100 or higher plan, then, in theory, it is possible that you do not need to do anything, since we hope that many RSP are automatically imposed the speed that increases once they have made any required rhythm. It is also possible that you need a new modem router to achieve the new maximum speeds of your plan, which we have detailed a little more below.
However, if you want to update the new NBN 2000 level, then you must register for a plan through a NBN provider when available. The majority of customers who are registered in NBN 2000 will also require a new network termination device (NTD), which requires a technician to visit their facilities to install and organize after ordering the plan from their selected RSP.
If it currently connects through a node fiber (FTTN) or fiber to the Borb (FTTC) connection, then you must update the equipment to FTTP to access any of these improved speeds. Many FTTN and FTTC connections can access this update free of charge thanks to NBN CO Free Fiber Update ProgramWhile living in an eligible suburb.
Most suburbs in Australia, where there is a fixed -line NBN connection, must now be eligible, and NBN CO has previously stated that it intends to make the program available to 10 million homes at the end of 2025.

If you have already registered for an NBN 100 plan, on September 14, you may be able to ask your supplier to activate the update for you. If registered in a slower plan, NBN 50 or lower, then you must change at least one NBN 100 plan to receive free FTTP update.
How much will the updated NBN plans cost?
In theory, for those in the NBN 100, 250 and 1000 plans, the improvements should not increase their monthly rate, or if there is a price increase, it should only be minimal.
NBN CO has instituted new wholesale costs for its current plan plan from July 1, 2025, which will probably see small increases in all areas before the deployment of speed update. However, NBN CO has declared that RSP will not charge a higher wholesale cost when improved speeds enter into force, therefore, the wholesale cost of a 500 NBN plan will be the same as a NBN 100 plan.
However, there is an unknown key when it comes to costs, and that is that with a part of the Internet access that is out of NBN CO: international bandwidth. Because the national broadband network infrastructure alone operates within Australia, depends on each supplier to organize its own international connections.
These are necessary to reach any site or service that does not have servers located in Australia. While many important brands and platforms (such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Microsoft and PlayStation) have Australian servers, there are some notable exceptions: Tiktok is a key, and traffic for these has an additional cost to RSP.
So, although we would love to say categorically that the fastest plans will not cost as of September, the RSPs have costs beyond the wholesale rates NBN co. In particular, if suppliers believe that the increase in speeds will force their current ability to serve international traffic, and therefore must buy wider band to face, they can transmit a small increase to the monthly fees of customers.
My current modem router will continue to work with the new speeds?
The main recommendation we can do with respect to the next speed impulse is, if you get them, you will want to make sure you have an appropriate Wi-Fi router at home that can support the fastest speeds.
