The rescue authorities on Saturday safely evacuated 25 people, including women and children, who were stranded on the Indo River, near Shadi Khan, Attock, after a sudden increase in water levels due to monsoon rains and the opening of the spills of the Tarbela dam.
According to rescue officials, the group was caught when the river flow intensified unexpectedly, leaving them isolated and unable to return to security.
The operation, which lasted five hours, was performed by emergency teams that acted quickly to avoid victims. The cattle also stranded in the river secured during the operation. The rescue sources declared that the increase in the water level at the point of Shadi Khan was caused by the release of water fed with monzón from the spills of the Tarbela dam.
The prompt response assured that all people were transferred to a safe location without injuries.
A day ago, in the middle of a relentless rain in the upper regions and the water level in the increase in the Tarbela dam, which leads the authorities to open the dumps of the dam to handle the entrance. The authorities had warned that the release of the landfill would probably result in flood conditions on the Indo River.
According to a spokesman for the National Authority for Disaster Management (NDMA), the opening of spills could cause water flow to increase significantly, varying between 260,000 and 270,000 Cusecs. The authority advised the residents in the adjacent regions that were kept away from the river banks and the water channels.
Tourists who visit scenic places near the Indo River have also been urged to exercise caution and cooperate with local authorities to avoid adverse incidents.
