The goalkeeper of the Seattle Sounders, Stefan Frei, was taken from the field in an ambulance during Sunday’s game against Columbus’s crew after a terrifying collision.
In the middle of a 1-1 game, Frei jumped to play in a free kick. When he went down, his head crashed with the knee of a crew player. Frei fell to the ground and the players around him indicated help immediately.

He was alert when he left the field, said the coach of the Sounders, Brian Schmetzer. It was being evaluated by head and neck injuries.
“His fingers moved, so he was fine in that sense. Without paralysis, nothing important, but obviously I don’t want to minimize it,” Schmetzer said.
Schmetzer and the Wilfried Nancy crew coach appealed to the referees to stop the game. He applauded Nancy for getting the officers to call the party even when Columbus received a corner kick in the final moments.
The goalkeeper wrote on social networks on Monday that he was back at home.

“I am still trying to discover what happened at the end of the game,” Frei wrote in X, “but I am incredibly grateful to all the staff who took care of me and happy to be back at home resting now.
“What resonates is all the messages, calls and love that I have received from many of you.”
Frei, 39, was born in Switzerland, but moved to the United States when he was a teenager. He played university football in Cal.
He has been with the Sounders since 2014 and was in his winning squads of the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019. It was the MVP of the 2016 MLS Cup and an All-Star in 2017.
He was with Toronto FC from 2009 to 2013 before joining Seattle.

The MLS veteran has appeared in 425 games, starting in 424 of them. He has played in 343 matches for the Sounders. The team said that he made his seasonal savings number 1,000 in the regular season in the match against the crew and that only former Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando, has more with a single team with 1,128.
