Jemima Goldsmith calls Pakistan’s actions against his children a ‘personal revenge’

Jemima Goldsmith, the former wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, accused the Pakistani government of preventing their children from talking to their father and threatening to arrest them if they try to visit him, describing him as “a personal revenge.”

Imran, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI), has been in solitary confinement since August 2023, after being imprisoned by multiple positions ranging from corruption to terrorism.

“My children are not allowed to talk to their father Imran Khan. He has been in lone confinement in prison for almost 2 years,” Goldsmith published in X (previously Twitter).

“The Pakistan government has now said that if they go there to try to see it, they will also be arrested and placed behind bars. This does not happen in a democracy or in a functional state. This is not political. It is a personal revenge,” he added.

Goldsmith’s statement occurred after the comments, the prime minister on political matters, Rana Sanoullah warned that Khan’s children would be arrested if they joined a PTI protest planned in Pakistan.

Previously, Imran’s sister, Aleema Khan, had that the children of former prime minister, Suleman and Kasim Khan would join the protest movement initiated by him.

Aleem made these comments after a visit to the Adiala prison, during which she and her sisters Uzma and Noreen Khan, along with the lawyers of the party, met Imran. However, Aleema was denied permission to meet with his brother.

Speaking to the media, Aleema said that Imran would lead the protest from the bars. “Imran Khan has said that he will lead the protest movement. He is free while he is in jail, but we are prisoners despite being outside,” he said.

He added that his children, Suleman and Kasim, would join the movement in support of his father after visiting the United States.

Previously, in May, Suleman and Kasim had publicly approached their father’s imprisonment and requested international pressure on Pakistan to ensure their release.

This was the first instance that the brothers talked about the situation of their father, although he was allowed to contact him weekly since November 2023. According to Imran’s children, these calls were inconsistent and difficult to organize.

In an interview with the influential X (previously Twitter) Mario Nawfal, the brothers explained why they decided to break their silence.

“We have gone through the legal routes. We have followed all the routes that we think would potentially take it out. We never thought there would be a fraction of how long it has been there. And it is only getting worse. And so, we have run out of those options. And now we have decided that the only route of taking measures is to come and speak publicly,” Kasim said.

“What we want is the international pressure on Pakistan at this time because he is currently living in inhuman conditions. They are not giving him basic human rights … They are not doing close enough. And what we want is global pressure,” he added.
