Nine unsafe buildings in Lyari de Karachi unemployed, says Sharjeel Memon

Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon said Thursday that nine insecure buildings in the Lyari area of ​​Karachi have been unemployed, with ongoing demolition work in one of them, said Express News.

The development follows the collapse of a five -story residential building in the Lyari Baghdadi area last week, which charged 27 lives and left another 10 wounds.

In response, Sindh’s prime minister Murad Ali Shah suspended the general director of the Control Authority of Sindh (SBCA) and constituted an investigation committee to investigate the incident.

In a statement, Memon said that the newly appointed CEO of the SBCA, Shahmir Khan Bhutto, ordered all officers to present details of their assets within 15 days. He warned that strict measures would be taken against officials involved in the construction or protection of illegal buildings.

Meanwhile, there has been a case in relation to the collapse of the Lyari building. Police have arrested several SBCA higher officers, as well as the owners of the building.

According to officials, special equipment has been formed to arrest those appointed in the FIR, which has been sealed. In a raid at the SBCA office, the Police arrested eight senior officers, including a former official, to interrogate him.

The detainees include the additional director Irfan Naqvi, Zargham Shah, Asif Rizvi, Ashfaq Khokhar, Deputy Director Faheem Siddiqui, Deputy Director Zulfiqar Shah, Faheem Murtaza and the retired director Asif Rizvi. The owners of the buildings have also been arrested.

The sources said that the detainees are being interrogated with respect to the illegal constructions in the Lyari area.

Touching the electricity sector of the province, the minister announced that the Sindh government will present the electrical policy of Sindh 2024 next month. As part of the plan to stimulate industrial growth, a subsidy of RS18 per unit will be offered by electricity in the industrial areas of Nooriabad and Dhabeji.

He also said that the Environmental Protection Agency has launched a repression of the illegal discharge of wastewater in Sea View, directing inspection equipment to present a report within 48 hours.

Regarding consumer rights, Memon said that Neprol has instructed K-Electric and other electric companies to reimburse the amounts overloaded to consumers for April and May 2025. A refund of RS4.035 and 50 PAISA per unit will be issued.

The minister expressed concern about the termination of 800 employees of the Public Services Stores Corporation in Sindh, qualifying the “unfortunate” decision. He said that employees have not been reinstated despite a court order.
