- Exchange Server and Skype for extended commercial support on October 14, 2025
- A final ESU will be available for just six months.
- Customers are urged to update as soon as possible to stay safe
Microsoft has confirmed a series of welcome updates that will see older versions of their Exchange and Skype for Business server retain the support a little more, to give customers time to continue migrating to newer options.
Exchange Server 2016 and 2019, and Skype for Business 2015 and 2019, will lose support on October 14, 2025, the same day that Windows 10 also loses support, but a new extended security update (ESU) will be offered instead.
Unlike the operating system, Esus, Exchange and Skype will only be available with a unique ESU program and that covers security updates with critical and important classification, but it is still a welcome movement for those who need some extra time.
Microsoft offers a six -month esu in Exchange and Skype
The ESU period will run from October 14, 2025 to April 14, 2026, without possible more extensions.
Customers can communicate with Microsoft since August 1 to obtain price and purchase details, since Esus will not be available through Windows Update or public downloads, only for those who have registered in the program.
“This ESU is not an ‘extension of the support life cycle’,” Microsoft added. “This ESU is a form for customers who may not finish their migrations to exchange SE before October 14, 2025”. Redmond made the same comments for Skype in another publication.
As such, the company urges customers to complete migrations to exchange the subscription edition (SE) or Skype for Business SE before the end of the support.
It is not clear how many users remain in older versions and who will soon be without compensating for Exchange of Skype, but the migration of Windows 11 is something to happen, it could be a lot. It was only in June 2025 that the number of Windows 10 facilities and Windows 11 reached almost parity, before that, the number of people running Windows 10 was much higher.
