Bills’ Sean McDermott avoids airplane analogy for team after 9/11 reference controversy

The Buffalo Bills earned an unconvincing win in the cold against the New England Patriots on Sunday, a week after a dominant display over the Detroit Lions.

The Bills were expected to blow the lowly Patriots out of the water. But New England held firm for at least three quarters of the game. A costly mistake by rookie quarterback Drake Maye in the fourth quarter allowed the Bills to take advantage for a 24-21 victory.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott was asked on Monday about the team’s performance in the first half. He said he was going to do a comparison of airplanes but he didn’t want to intervene.

“Um, let’s see, I was about to use an airplane flight analogy, but I’ll stay away from that,” he said.

McDermott apparently referenced a baffling story from last December when it was revealed that he tried to illustrate how the team could come together after a season in which they had lost in the AFC Championship.

The moment was chronicled on Ty Dunne’s Go Long TD Substack.

“He told the whole team they had to come together,” Dunne wrote of McDermott. “But then, available sources say, he used a strange model: the terrorists of September 11, 2001. He cited the hijackers as a group of people who were able to get in sync to orchestrate attacks to perfection.

“One by one, McDermott began asking questions of specific players in the room. ‘What tactics do you think they used to get together?’ One young player methodically tried to answer, “What do you think was your biggest obstacle?” A veteran replied, ‘TSA,’ which thankfully lightened the mood.”

McDermott said last year that he regretted the analogy.

This year, Buffalo is once again among the best teams in the AFC and is the reason for the Kansas City Chiefs’ only loss of the season.
