Islamabad:
The senators denounced on Monday a brutal incident of honor murder in Baluchistan, where, according to reports, a man and a woman were shot dead.
While discussing a motion moved by Senator Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur to highlight the need for policy intervention by the government to eliminate gender discrimination and promote the participation of women in economic activities throughout the country, legislators condemned practice as “barbarian and inhuman”, stating that no civilized society can tolerate such a way. They demanded a rapid and decisive action against the perpetrators and emphasized the need for justice.
Senator Irfan-Ul-Haque Siddiqui urged the camera not only to condemn the barbarian incident, but also to recommend concrete measures to prevent such tragedies from being used. He expressed concern about the apparent inaction of the provincial government, noting that although the incident occurred two months before, it only came to light after the circulation of a video on social networks.
He urged other senators, particularly those of Baluchistan to join the efforts to dismantle the self -imposed system, where people assume the roles of the judge, the jury and the executioner without any legal authority to do so.
He said that the brutal incident has brought the entire nation ashamed. However, he emphasized that the mere condemnation is not enough unless the root causes are addressed behind the illegal murder of the couple.
Senator Ali Zafar proposed the formation of a monitoring committee to ensure that the culprits involved in the murder of honor are taken to justice within a fortnight.
Among those voice concerns were senators Sherry Rehman, Khalida Ateeb, Aimal Wali Khan, Irfan-Ul-Haque Siddiqui, Ali Zafar and Samina Mumtaz Zehri.
