LAHORE: After the successful introduction of electric buses, Lahore is now preparing to welcome electric trams as part of its public transport network, a Orange Line spokesman confirmed on Tuesday.

The authorities have made an order for these trams of China, marking another milestone in their movement towards a more sustainable and ecological urban traffic system.

According to the spokesman, the new electric trams are highly efficient, capable of traveling 25 to 27 kilometers with only a 10 -minute load.

Each tram will have a three compartments (three boxes) and will have the capacity to take up to 250 passengers at the same time.

“The assembly of the first three compartments is currently in progress in the tank of the city of Ali,” added the spokesman.

The electric tram service will initially be launched as a pilot project, with a proposed route that takes place from Thakar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura.

“At first, the tram will work based on trial,” said the spokesman. “It has been proposed that the service is offered free of charge during this phase. If it succeeds, rates structures for regular operations will be introduced.”
