Adam McKay, director of Don’t look upstates that if the United States continues down what he called the “right-wing” path, films like Wicked could be “banned in 3 to 5 years.”

“On a purely narrative level, ‘Wicked Part 1’ is on par with one of the most radical big-studio Hollywood films ever made,” he wrote in X.

“I know that ‘Part 2’ goes back to center a bit, but ‘Part 1’ is openly about radicalization versus careerism, fascism, [and] propaganda.”

“What’s really surprising about ‘Wicked Part 1’ is that it’s coming out NOW, when America has never been more right-wing and propagandistic,” the filmmaker continued.

“And yes, I know the stage production and the book are much older, so some of the timing is a coincidence, but still… I think you’ll be surprised. If America continues on the right path, it wouldn’t” . “I would be surprised to see the film banned in 3 to 5 years.”

The movie is “VERY radical” and the co-star, Ariana Grande, is an “incredible” actress. “It’s as good a performance as you’ll find in any genre,” Adam shared.

Wicked is playing in theaters now, as the second part is due out in 2025.
