The former president of the Senate, Mian Raza Rabbani, criticized the Federal Government for not maintaining transparency in the completion of an oil exploration agreement with the United States, which was publicly revealed through a tweet from the president of the United States on Wednesday night.

In a press release issued on Thursday, Rabbani said it was “a sad day for transparency and good governance” when the people of Pakistan had to know in such agreement through social networks instead of formal governmental channels.

He reminded the Federal Government that, according to article 172 (3) of the 1973 Constitution, the provinces have a 50% property participation in all lands, minerals and value resources. “Such agreements and projects fall under constitutional provisions and cannot be completed unilaterally,” he said.

Asking for greater institutional supervision, Rabbani demanded that the Government take Parliament in confidence about what he called “Western oriented initiatives.”

In addition, he urged the federal authorities to convene a meeting of the Common Interests Council (CCI) to involve all provinces in discussions on the oil agreement and similar future projects.

The United States arrived at a commercial agreement with Pakistan, the president of the United States said on Wednesday, after announcing 25% tariffs in India imports, in addition to the “penalty” not specified on the purchases of Russian weapons and energy of New Delhi.

“We have just concluded an agreement with the country of Pakistan, for which Pakistan and the United States will work together in the development of their huge oil reserves,” Trump wrote in a publication on his social media platform of ‘Truth Social’.

“We are in the process of choosing the oil company that will lead this association. Who knows, maybe they will sell oil to India one day!” The president of the United States wrote in his publication, without giving additional details of the agreement.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his gratitude on Thursday to the president of the United States, Donald Trump, for his role in completing a “historical” commercial agreement between Pakistan and the United States.
