NDMA FLATS ANTEXINA Lighting threat

Islamabad:

The National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) of NDMA has issued a new flood alert in view of an intensifying monsoon system that affects the upper and central regions of Pakistan from August 5 to 8.

The alert follows the combined influence of penetrating monsoon currents and a west channel on northern Pakistan, which is expected to result in strong scattered rains during this period.

An increase in entries in all the main rivers is anticipated, especially Indo, Chenab and Ravi, with Nullahs from Ravi and Chenab that will probably reach the average levels of flooding. Tarbela, Guddu and Sukkur barriers are currently in a low flood stage, but continuous rain can also push for Chashma and Taunsa towards low flood levels.

The Chenab River is expected to reach a low flood, while the Jhelum river upstream from Mangla Dam, along with its tributaries, can achieve middle flows. The Kabul River in Nowshera, and the Swat and Panjkora River with its associated currents and nullahs is also likely to swell due to the persistent rain in their collection areas.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, stream networks in the Hunza, Shigar and Ghanche districts can see a significant increase in water levels with sudden flood potential located on tributaries. Current storage levels in the main deposits show that 94% tarbela and 61% mangrove, and a greater entrance is expected.

NDMA urges residents who live near rivers, streams and nullahs to remain vigilant due to sudden increases in water levels, especially at night and during periods of heavy rains. The public is advised to remain updated through official flood warnings through television, radio, mobile alerts and a Pak NDMA disaster alert application.
