Stephen A. Smith responded to a recent opinion article of the Wall Street Journal who requested a government investigation into WNBA for the controversial management of physical works against the superstar Caitlin Clark.
The Wall Street Journal article entitled “The civil rights of the WNBA and Caitlin Clark” caused mixed reactions this week after arguing that Clark has been the subject of a hostile workplace due to how the referees have called physical works against their relations with their rookie season in 2024. The piece requested a federal investigation in “possible violations of civil rights.”

Smith suggested support for a possible investigation.
“I am not here saying that the case will be won by the Government if you reach the points. I am saying that they have a case, they have a discussion,” Smith said about the idea during an episode of his program on Tuesday.
Smith also suggested that President Donald Trump could use such investigation to consolidate support among his followers.
“Do we doubt that at your discretion, at your disposal, if you consider that this is a problem that is politically convenient for him, that Trump will not use this to feed his base?” Smith said. “Yeah [Clark] It is seen that it is being physically abused on the basketball court in a way that is such a clear and flagrant discrepancy compared to what happens to others, which that Will not say something?
“Don’t you think Catilin Clark could become a problem of national and definitely federal national proportions?”
Smith cited recent agreements from Columbia University and Harvard University with Trump’s administration to resolve the alleged civil rights violations against Jewish students and employees as a comparison for a potential investigation into the treatment of WNBA to Clark.
“If the Trump administration can be established with Columbia for a $ 221 million agreement on what has taken place in a campus, do you think it can definitely rule out what type of noise could be done if the WNBA continues to allow this Caitlin Clark treatment?” Smith said.
Clark’s teammate, the fever star, Sophie Cunningham, has been one of the most vowel criticisms of WNBA players and referees in Clark’s physical treatment and how it is handled.

Cunningam revealed how his former team, the Phoenix MercuryHe planned to play Clark during the rookie season of the phenomenon in 2024. Cunningham played his first five seasons in Phoenix before leaving to join the fever last season.
“You will have players in oure league try to, like, toughen up caitlin … Even when i was ost on her team, i know the talks that phoenix had in the locker room, like, Every Rookie Coming Into The League, That’s How You’re Going To Treat ‘Em, But There’s Just More for Her, “Cunningham He said in his podcasT last week.
“And now be on your team and see it, I’m like, ‘What are people doing?’ Actually, it’s too much.
Cunningham was on the other side of the situation when a fight began to defend Clark during a game against Connecticut Sun earlier this season. Cunningham said after the game, Clark exclaimed “Finally!” In the locker room.
“In the locker room, she says, I think she says: ‘Finally!'”, Cunningham said. “But I think he had our team together as a whole. They all said: ‘We have to protect each other.”
The fight fell into Connecticut on June 17, when Cunningham committed a strong foul on the Guard of Sun Jacy Sheldon. Sheldon POKED CLARK IN THE EYE Previously in the game, and then Sun’s companion, Marina Mabrey, pushed Clark to the ground.

Cunningham previously called the referees only a few days after the fight of June 17 while talking to journalists, for not protecting Clark, when he had to approach the fight publicly.
“During that, it was only part of the game. I think the referees had a lot to do with that. It was an accumulation for a couple of years of them, simply not protecting the star player from the WNBA,” Cunningham said. “At the end of the day, I’m going to protect my teammates. That’s what I do.”
