The Telco French Giatn Bouygues Telecomunda has confirmed that suffering a cyber attack in which she lost confidential data of customers.
In a brief announcement published on its website, the company said it detected the attack on August 4, and after an investigation, the specific threat actors stole the contact data of the people, the contract data, the data of the civil status (or the details of the company) and the numbers of IBAN.
We do not know exactly when the intrusion occurred, who did it, if it was a ransomware attack or not, or how many people were affected, but the company’s official data is affirmed, Bouygues Telecom has 26.8 million subscribers.
Phishing potential
The Teleco began notifying people affected through SMS, overthrew the attackers and allegedly implemented additional safeguards to avoid additional incursions.
“We have blocked malicious access, the greatest monitoring of our systems and implement additional necessary security measures,” said the company.
The bank card numbers and the passwords of the Bouygues telecommunications account were not affected.
While there is still no evidence that the stolen information in the attack is being abused in nature, the very nature of the archive gives it a lot of potential.
Cybercriminals can use it to create convincing phishing emails, impersonate the victims to the action threatening to finish their account.
Knowing information such as contract data and IBAN numbers could convince the victims that they are talking to legitimate representatives of the organization.
In a short frequent question, Bouygues said that “strongly recommends” users to remain attentive and never share their credentials or login passwords.
“Be especially cautious with the calls of false bank advisors who can try to gain their trust by mentioning your name or account number. In case of doubt, hang and call your bank or advisor in your usual number.”
Finally, the company emphasized that the number went alone is not enough to start financial transactions, but users must still monitor their accounts closely.
