PM Orders Completion of the 100MW GB Solar Project in one year

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered the authorities to guarantee the completion of the solar energy project of 100 megawatts in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) within a year, reaffirming the total financial commitment of the federal government with the initiative.

By chairing a review meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister said the project would be executed in a priority to provide uninterrupted electricity, low and environmentally sustainable to the region, which frequently faces prolonged power cuts.

The prime minister said he would personally supervise the progress of the project, which he described as a crucial step to end the energy shortage in GB. In addition, he instructed that the infrastructure was built to resist the impacts of climate change.

Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, he said, “Solarization offers the most practical solution for remote regions such as GB, where 18 to 20 hours of load displacement remain a routine challenge.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz also directed that the supply of electricity from hydroelectric and lots sources is strengthened to help residents cope with extreme climatic conditions and energy interruptions.

To guarantee an effective implementation, the Minister of Energy, Awais Leghari, was appointed president of the Steering Committee that supervises the project. During the informative session, the meeting was reported to establish six solar parks in Gilgit, eight in Skardu and six in Diamer.

In addition, solar panels would be installed in 234 government buildings in Gilgit, 179 in Skardu and 66 in Diamer. A real -time monitoring system for battery backup is also being developed.

The officials assured that the project would adhere to international standards and that transparency would be guaranteed throughout its construction.

Prime Minister Shehbaz had previously announced during his visit to GB, as Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) also approved the project a few days later.

Separately, in a meeting with the President of the National Authority for Disaster Management (NDMA), the GEN gene, Inam Haider, Malik, the prime minister ordered the authority to improve coordination with provincial governments for effective response and rehabilitation efforts in recent rains and recent floods.

He requested the rapid operationalization of the GB early alert system in coordination with the Ministry of Climate Change, emphasizing the importance of timely alerts in vulnerable areas to reduce risks during extreme climatic events.
