Pakistan blocks more than 500 social media accounts linked to terrorists


The Pakistan government has blocked more than 500 social media accounts linked to prohibited militant groups after informing more than 850 accounts on different platforms in a national repression.

The stories, supposedly linked to banned groups such as Tehreek-E-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Baloch Liberation Army (Bla) and Baloch Liberation Front (BLF), all prohibited by the United Nations, the United States and the United Kingdom, also had combined follow-up of more than two million.

Pakistan reported more than 850 social media accounts and around 533 of them were blocked. The newly formed National Cyber Crime Research Agency (Nccia) and the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) coordinated the action, reporting accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, X (previously Twitter), Telegram and WhatsApp.

The Federal Minister of IT, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, obtained the direct cooperation of Telegram officials also even though the application was prohibited in Pakistan.

Facebook and Tiktok acted in more than 90% of the elimination requests, while X and WhatsApp showed 30% compliance.

The authorities warned that, although the main Pakistani media remain free of extremist content, militant groups are still using online platforms for recruitment and incitement.

Islamabad urged global platforms to permanently block accounts related to terrorists, implement AI -based elimination systems and maintain direct contact with the Pakistani authorities.
