It was exactly a week ago to date that I suggested you not wait for the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft if you were in Australia as I didn’t think Amazon would release it before July. Well, I’m eating my words now, as the three new Kindle Scribe 2025s that were first announced back in October of last year are now available for pre-order.
These are the front-lit Kindle Scribe 2025 for AU$699, the new front-lit Kindle Scribe from AU$849 (32GB), and the highly anticipated Kindle Scribe Colorsoft starting at AU$999 (32GB). All three will begin shipping on June 10.
Is it worth the upgrade?
I myself have been eagerly awaiting the release of the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, but its starting price of AU$999 for 32GB of storage has me hesitant! The reMarkable Paper Pro starts at AU$929 with the basic pen and 64GB of storage, and uses display technology no other brand has adopted yet (it’s a custom version of E Ink’s Gallery 3 display).
However, with 11 inches of screen real estate, plus support for Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is arguably more versatile.
On the other hand, the Boox Note Air5 C costs AU$919 in Australia and its Android-based operating system makes this color digital notebook much more versatile than your Kindle or its reMarkable counterparts. Although it is heavy.
So maybe you can see my conundrum: I can (more or less) justify Colorsoft’s price, but I’d be hard-pressed to recommend it at full price. But considering my buddy Lance has been using it since launch and loves to draw, I’d be very tempted to upgrade to my 2024 edition if it gets its first discount when Prime Day 2026 rolls around.
On the other hand, I find it difficult to recommend a color digital laptop at the best of times and I would still say that a monochrome version is much cheaper for most users. After all, E Ink display technology doesn’t exist yet, and most of us read and write in grayscale and wouldn’t take full advantage of a color display.
But the higher prices of the two new monochrome Kindle Scribes are definitely hard to justify, despite the RAM crisis and inflation. Since Amazon has previously implemented new features on the original Kindle Scribe 2022 after the release of the 2024 model, I suggest purchasing the Kindle Scribe 2024 now while it is discounted to its lowest price; Honestly, it’s worth it even without the new features, but Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive support would be very welcome.
