Capital launches first ‘Mehfooz Muharram’ app for digital security monitoring

For the first time in the federal capital, authorities have developed a special digital application, “Mehfooz Muharram” (Safe Muharram), as part of extensive security arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram, with complete PAkGazette-tagging of all imambargahs, religious gatherings and procession routes, along with drone-based digital surveillance.

The measures were reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who assessed administrative and security preparations for Muharram celebrations on Thursday.

Officials informed the meeting that the newly launched ‘Mehfooz Muharram’ app would allow citizens to report suspicious persons, suspicious activities or inadequate security measures.

The app would also provide live image and location sharing features to help authorities quickly respond to potential security issues.

A central control room has been established in Safe City Islamabad to monitor security operations and coordinate responses during the holy month.

The minister ordered authorities to implement a comprehensive traffic management plan and ensure a four-level security cordon around all religious gatherings and processions. He also ordered strict screening procedures at all entry and exit points of the procession routes and at places where majalis are held.

Emphasizing the importance of on-ground supervision, Naqvi instructed all relevant officers to remain present on the ground throughout Muharram. He further directed officials to ensure timely and adequate arrangements of food and refreshments for security personnel deployed on duty.

The Home Minister highlighted the need for close coordination with religious scholars to maintain peace and public order. It also called for strict compliance with the code of conduct and ordered authorities to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against provocative or inflammatory material.

During the briefing, the Chief Commissioner and Inspector General of Islamabad Police presented a detailed overview of the security preparations. Officials informed the meeting that security audits of all majalis and processions had been completed, while the Peace and Nigehban Committees had been activated to support law enforcement efforts.

The authorities expressed confidence that the coordinated security framework and enhanced technological monitoring would help ensure a safe and peaceful Muharram in the capital.
