- Disney+ has received a surprise, albeit temporary, price drop in the UK
- Right now it’s available for just £3.99 per month.
- The recent launch of a major streaming rival could be to blame
Disney has announced an unexpected but temporary price drop across all tiers of Disney+.
In a press release, the House of Mouse surprisingly confirmed that, as of yesterday (April 23), one of the world’s best streaming services is now available for just £3.99 a month.
The 30% discount, which new and returning users can take advantage of, can also be used on any of the three plans offered by Disney+. Here’s a quick breakdown of how much each one costs now compared to their usual price bands:
Article continues below.
- Standard Disney+ with ads — £3.99/month (was £5.99/month)
- Disney+ Standard (ad-free) — £6.99/month (was £9.99/month)
- Disney+ Premium (ad-free) — £9.99/month (was £14.99/month)
As always, there are a couple of caveats to keep in mind.
First, this limited-time offer will end at 11:59 pm on May 6, meaning you only have two weeks to take advantage of it. So if you’ve been thinking about signing up for Disney+ for a while, but couldn’t because you’ve been working on a limited budget, now is a good time to see what it’s all about.
The other factor to consider is that the cost reduction measure is only available for the first three months after signing up. Once your subscription reaches the fourth month, you will start paying the full amount. If you’re simply interested in watching Disney+ while it’s less expensive than normal, be sure to cancel your new subscription before that period ends.
Why has the cost of Disney+ suddenly dropped?
This isn’t the first time Disney+ has been available at a cheaper price than normal. The streaming titan has occasionally received discounts on major shopping events and holiday periods, such as Black Friday and the holiday season. However, this is the first time in a long time that it has been offered at a reduced price at the beginning of a given year.
So what is the reason for this decision? Disney hasn’t specifically explained why, but I suspect there’s a big culprit behind the cost-cutting move: HBO Max.
Think about it. After waiting years for its arrival, UK customers finally got the chance to see what all the fuss was about with HBO Max when it launched on British shores at the end of March. The debut of Warner Bros-owned platform Discovery in the UK will surely have piqued the interest of anyone looking for a new streamer to watch, especially if they were tired of what other services such as Disney+, Netflix and Prime Video offer.
The appearance of a new kid on the block surely set off alarm bells at Disney headquarters, especially if Disney+ users suddenly closed their accounts and flocked to HBO Max. Add in the fact that HBO Max would finally allow UK viewers to stream hugely popular shows like The pitwhich weren’t available anywhere before the streamer’s launch, and the British public have had something brilliant and exciting to explore with their hard-earned money.
In my opinion, it’s no coincidence that a Disney+ subscription has become less expensive less than a month after HBO Max debuted in the UK. The latter’s ad-supported tier is also available for just £4.99 a month, making it a serious alternative to Disney+’s generally more expensive ad-based offering.
