- Meta is reportedly working on several smart glasses
- Includes smart Oakley specs, like their Ray-Ban, and screen glasses.
- Artemis, consumer versions of Orion, are planned for 2027
We already knew that Meta was working on improvements to its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses in the form of the Meta Orion AR glasses prototype, and leaks also point to a screen-equipped version of its Ray-Ban specs arriving this year, but It also reportedly has a few other tricks up its sleeve, including Oakley-branded smart glasses designed for athletes and headphones with built-in cameras.
This is according to details shared by Bloomberg (article behind a paywall), which are attributed to people familiar with the projects who were asked not to be identified.
Starting with the “Hypernova” project, the name given to those screen-enabled Ray-Ban glasses, Bloomberg’s report backs up details we’ve heard before that such smart glasses would arrive this year, with the first teaser coming from an internal leak. Meta roadmap The Verge shared in 2023, although we’ve heard more recently that a 2025 launch is planned.
We may now also know a little more about the Hypernova, as the Bloomberg leak reveals that the screen will be at the bottom of the right lens and can show apps, notifications and previews of the images you have taken with the glasses, what it sounds like. much closer to Orion’s capabilities than some expected (including us). The Hypernova won’t be cheap, however, with some suggesting it could cost around $1,000 (£800/AU$1,600), which is three times more expensive than the cheapest Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.
The leaks also tease “Artemis,” which will be released in 2027 and will be the commercial version of Orion. Artemis prototypes are already said to be more advanced and lighter than Orion, although weight, cost of the device, and scale manufacturing are apparently challenges that Meta still needs to overcome before settling on a final version of Artemis.
Are Oakley smart specs coming?
If Ray-Bans aren’t your style, Meta is also rumored to be teaming up with Oakley (which shares a parent company with Ray-Ban) to create glasses labeled “Supernova 2,” which are said to be based on the Oakley Sphaera glasses. The glasses’ specifications would apparently be similar to Ray-Ban’s current model (i.e. camera, no screen), but would move the camera to the center of the glasses’ frame and include features to appeal to cyclists and athletes.
Precisely what this means beyond the shape of the frame remains to be seen, but as I have highlighted previously, it is important that wearables are not only useful but that they look good and come in many varieties of styles, as fashion It is an extension of who we are. than typical devices, so I won’t complain if Supernova ends up being effectively new styles of pre-existing specs, if anything, I’m all for it.
Finally, we have some more strange elements. We’ve previously heard about Meta’s Camerasbuds, which add cameras to more typical-looking earbuds, and apparently Samsung has similar plans, although that’s probably still some time away.
There’s also talk of a Meta smartwatch (which long-time readers will know is rumored to be canceled or not canceled every few months). Codenamed “Ceres,” this latest version is less of a watch and more of a band to control Meta’s smart glasses. We’ve already seen a version of Ceres used to control the Meta Orion smart glasses, and according to the leak, Meta is considering including the bracelet with Hypernova; The alternative would be to rely solely on touch controls on the frames of the glasses (as we have seen in the current model of Ray-Ban smart glasses).
While all of these new rumored details about Hypernova, Artemis, Supernova 2, and Ceres are consistent with previous leaks and official details, they’re worth taking with a pinch of salt. Until Meta makes its plans known in a proper environment, they could always change, especially projects like Artemis, which are said to still be in the prototype stage. To find out what Meta really has up his sleeve.
