Newly elected members of the UK General Assembly take the oath


Pakistan People’s Party emerged as the largest party with 11 seats, followed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz with six.

The newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Assembly took oath on Monday during the inaugural session held at the Assembly Hall in Gilgit, formally marking the start of a new five-year legislative term.

GB Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan announced the final results for all 24 constituencies on June 17, almost 10 days after the elections. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) emerged as the largest party in the assembly with 11 seats, followed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with six.

The Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party became the third largest parliamentary group after four successful independent candidates joined the party after the elections. The Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen won one seat, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independents won two seats.

The outgoing advocate of the General Assembly of Great Britain, Nazir Ahmed, administered the oath to the newly elected legislators. During the ceremony, all members pledged to serve the people, defend the Constitution and the law and fulfill their responsibilities with honesty and dedication.

After the swearing-in ceremony, the assembly will proceed with its planned work in accordance with the internal regulations. The agenda includes the election of the president, vice president and leader of the house, along with other parliamentary business.

A day earlier, PPP president Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had nominated PPP provincial president Advocate Amjad as GB chief minister, according to a post shared by the party on X.

On June 20, deliberations between the PPP and the PML-N over the distribution of positions led to an agreement under which the former would get the post of prime minister, while the posts of governor, leader of the opposition and vice-president of the GB Assembly would go to the PML-N leadership.

The PPP had won the majority of seats during the June 7 elections. The opposition, including the PTI, rejected the election results and alleged widespread fraud and manipulation.
