When the Los Angeles Rams selected quarterback Ty Simpson in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday, head coach Sean McVay didn’t seem thrilled and admitted as much on Friday.
McVay, while recapping the second day of the Rams’ draft, opened his press conference by acknowledging his behavior following the Simpson selection.
“I got my behavior last night, but we’re excited about it. There are different things. I always want to be aware of how things happen and things like that. I’m very excited about last night and I’m very excited about today. I couldn’t be more excited for us to continue to lead together, but every decision we make is collective and collaborative,” McVay said.

“For any questions or misunderstandings based simply on my behavior or disposition last night, I wanted to get that out of the way. This is my friend here.,” McVay said with a smile as he approached general manager Les Snead.
“They caught my attention because I received a lot of text messages. That was never my intention to get ahead, but sometimes I can be a little moody.”
A reporter followed up and asked the 40-year-old coach why he was in a bad mood.
“Well, there were other things that had nothing to do with it, which is normal life,” McVay said.

“The main thing was that I couldn’t be more excited to be able to add him, but also to understand how much I love Matthew Stafford, how respectful you always want to be and the way things can be interpreted. The demeanor would have been stoic in nature because you’re excited, but in no way – it’s Matthew’s football team.”
Stafford, in his 17th season, won his first MVP last year with the Rams. However, despite the success, Stafford has been considering retiring after each season for the past two seasons.
The 38-year-old quarterback only announced he would return for one more season when he capped his MVP speech with the news. With Stafford’s future seemingly uncertain after next season, the Rams moved ahead of their heir apparent.
McVay said he’s excited for Simpson to learn from Stafford.

“I’m excited to be able to add Ty. What a blessing it is for him to be able to learn from Matthew and to be able to come into this atmosphere and environment. Whenever that time comes for him, having the opportunity to be Matthew’s successor will be on Matthew’s terms. I think that’s really the important thing. I never wanted that to be misinterpreted without minimizing the enthusiasm for Ty and the acceptance,” McVay said.
“Les and his group really liked it. As soon as we started really studying it, there was a body of work, as I mentioned, which was a good, fun evaluation. A lot of the concepts we activated. The guy is a football junkie and plays with timing and rhythm. You can see he’s a coach’s son. It’s a fun journey he’s been through.”
If Simpson someday becomes the quarterback Stafford is, McVay won’t be in a bad mood often.
