- The HBO Max show does not yet have a confirmed premiere date
DC Studios has released the first official poster for its Lanterns Television show and its tagline has created three big topics of conversation among fans.
Posted online yesterday (April 23), the artwork shows its two protagonists, Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, standing in the shadow of a giant Lantern Corps. ring. One sheet is complete with a sinister-sounding tagline: “Only one can wear the ring,” as well as the series’ official logo and a reminder that Lanterns will premiere on HBO Max this August.

Little else has been publicly revealed about its plot or cast of characters, but we finally got to see some actual footage from the live-action show via an official teaser in early March. You can read more about that and my theories about the upcoming show in my Lanterns Article about trailer breakdowns.
Why has the slogan on the first Lanterns poster sparked three debates among fans?
But back to the poster and, more specifically, the possible intention behind its slogan. In fact, its presentation has sparked three major discussions among fans, one of which centers on the possible disappearance of an important character.
Before we get into that spoiler-based talk, let’s take a look at the other two conversations, starting with the fact that many were confused by his catchphrase.
The notion that “only one can wear the ring,” then, has baffled longtime readers who maintain that, with 7,199 other Green Lanterns, including another Earth-based Guy Gardner, whom we met in Superman and Pacifier season 2: out there, that this is a totally misleading statement.
However, as others have rightly pointed out, in this case, the catchphrase only refers specifically to Jordan and Stewart. In fact, of what Lanterns‘, the preview tells us, Stewart will replace Jordan as Earth’s second Green Lantern. That means Jordan will have to give up his Lantern Corps. sounds like Stewart, which is what the slogan actually alludes to.
The second big point of discussion is of a more fun nature.
With the taglines of the first three DCU films: Supermanin addition to the next supergirl and clay face – all starting with the word “look,” fans had begun joking that the tagline for every DCU Chapter One production would also start with that word. Unfortunately for those hoping to turn this into a meme, Lanterns‘ motto puts an end to those desires. Clearly everyone forgot. Creature commandsthe first DCU project that came out, didn’t have a tagline with the word “look” at the beginning…
But I digress. As I mentioned, one of these online conversations focuses on the possible disappearance of a key character in Lanterns. So, this is your only warning: potentially Major spoilers immediately follow, so don’t go past this point if you’re wary of what could happen..
As I mentioned, Lanterns He makes no secret of the fact that Stewart will succeed Jordan. That could happen gracefully, and Jordan would eventually trust Stewart to take his place.
On the other hand, Stewart could also become the custodian of Jordan’s ring if the latter dies in Lanterns. Whether it’s sacrificing himself to save the day or being killed by the show’s Big Bad, Jordan ditching his mortal coil shouldn’t be ruled out, especially since Stewart will appear in Superman continuation The man of tomorrowwill make it Lanterns alive.
Of course, it is quite possible that Lanterns He could throw us a huge curveball and see Jordan turn into Parallax. That’s the supervillain alias he adopted in the ’90s era of Green Lantern comics after Jordan’s hometown was destroyed and he descended into madness. That would make for a huge plot twist, especially if Stewart is forced to kill his mentor to save the day, a blindside moment that Redditors LastCryptographer173 and AdmiralFoxythePirate believe could realistically happen.
Anyway, I suspect that DC’s marketing team wasn’t expecting Lanterns‘ tagline to spark as many conversations as you’ve had. But hey, any publicity is good publicity, so I’m sure the comics giant would appreciate any kind of talk to keep him in the spotlight.
