Pakistan on Thursday reaffirmed its support for Libya’s sovereignty and a Libyan-led political process as the only viable path towards lasting peace and stability, according to a statement delivered at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
Speaking at the UN Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said: “For Pakistan, Libya is a brother country, and we remain steadfast in our support for its sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity.”
He welcomed recent political and security developments in Libya, while warning that significant challenges remain, particularly in achieving consensus on electoral arrangements.

Emphasizing Pakistan’s position on the political process, he stated: “A political process led and controlled by Libya is the only viable path to lasting peace and stability.” He added that Pakistan supports the ongoing efforts of UNSMIL, including structured dialogue aimed at overcoming institutional divisions.
On security, Pakistan welcomed what it described as “relative calm” in and around Tripoli, and urged continued engagement among Libyan stakeholders to advance security sector reform and unify military institutions across the country.
Highlighting progress on judicial and economic avenues, the envoy highlighted efforts by Libyan legal institutions to preserve judicial unity, as well as a recent agreement on a unified spending framework, which he said could support long-term economic stability.
On the sanctions, Ahmad emphasized their purpose, saying: “The sanctions measures, particularly the freezing of assets, are not punitive. Their main purpose is to safeguard Libya’s resources for the benefit of its people at a later stage.”
Pakistan reiterated its commitment to working with international partners to support “a stable, secure and united Libya.”
